Shipping My Bike
Will my bike be shipped as consolidated bike-only cargo or general cargo?
We require a minimum of 6 bikes to provide consolidated bike-only containers (except Dili, which is a min. of 4 bikes), and these are the scheduled shipments displayed here. We also ship individual bikes; however, these need to be loaded as general cargo in secure, protective crates (you can obtain your own crate and pack, or we can supply and pack).
Is the departure location in Australia and overseas flexible?
Yes, if there’s no departure scheduled or preferred date from your location, you can depart from another location. You can either deliver your bike to our depot in that location, or we can arrange reliable bike-only road freight for you. Also, when overseas and if wanting to depart from a different location to that which you arrived and it’s scheduled, you can request this at the time of booking.
When will my bike arrive?
To the UK and Europe (depending on the final destination), each vessel’s sailing takes between 52-65 days (7-9 weeks). To the West or East coast of the USA is shorter, generally 42-45 days (6 weeks) and obviously, to Timor Leste and NZ transit times are shorter; 18 days to Dili and 12 days to Christchurch on the South Island.
When do I need to drop-off my bike?
You’ll need to deliver your bike about 7 days prior to the vessel’s ETD, but we’ll confirm that with you nearer the time and provide all details.
How do you pack my bike?
For bike-only consolidated containers, each bike has its own customised secure system with multiple tie-down points at floor level. We DO NOT double-stack bikes. Each bike must have its fuel reduced to < 2Ltrs, and battery leads disconnected and taped to prevent any damage to sensors and the security system. For single bike general cargo shipments, the bike must be shipped in a secure, export-compliant enclosed crate.
Can my panniers and gear be shipped with my bike?
Yes, there’s provision for up to 3 bike-related luggage items to accompany your bike (no personal items allowed), provided they are packed securely and clearly tagged with your name and bike registration (and unlocked). We do not take responsibility for what you pack, and if questioned by Customs, our staff will fully cooperate with inspectors.
Can I include a tracking tag on my bike for monitoring?
Yes, we recommend that your bike have a small GPS tracking tag securely attached and preferably hidden. This can provide important peace of mind and save you time when planning to arrive for collection, and bike security while overseas.
I have an older bike. Can I still ship my bike from/to Australia?
Yes, you can ship it from Australia, but if manufactured prior to 1990 you unfortunately will not be able to bring it into Australia (except under specific conditions). Australia strictly prohibited the importation of older vehicles (including motorcycles) in 2003 due largely to the ban on asbestos material. The only exception is if you arrange and pay for an Asbestos Certificate stating that your bike no longer contains asbestos material, ie. all materials such as clutch plates, brake pads/discs, exhaust insulation, etc have been replaced.
Can I ship my race bike?
Yes, you can ship it from/to Australia, but you’ll need to apply for a ATA Carnet (for your state’s Automobile Association), which is a special carnet allowing the temporary, duty-free, and tax-free importation of bikes for use at ‘events’ overseas for up to 12 months. However, the bike cannot be used for ‘personal’ riding or touring while under an ATA Carnet.
Bike Rentals
Isn’t it just easier to rent a bike overseas?
For a short overseas visit, it’s definitely an option; however, be mindful that for 4+ weeks or an adventure through multiple countries, it’s more cost-effective to ship and ride your own bike. Often with rentals, there are several hidden costs, some won’t let you ride off-road and there’s some significant risks. Eg. most insurance is 3rd Party Only, not Comprehensive, and so you could find yourself significantly out of pocket paying for the bike, plus the claim excess can be high. Also, panniers, navigation, a taller screen, lower seat, and heated grips to customise your ride are often extra costs. There’s also nothing quite like knowing and riding your own bike!
Payment
When do I need to pay?
A deposit of AU$500 is required to secure your booking for either OneWay or Return on our scheduled shipments. For a Return booking 50% of the payment balance is due no later than 30 days prior to the loading date. If your booking is for OneWay only, the balance will be due no later than 30 days prior to the loading date.
What forms of payment do you accept?
We only accept EFT into our bank account in AUD currency.
Can I cancel my booking?
After your deposit is paid, we cannot accept cancellations unless at least 90 days before loading, meaning deposits are non-refundable. However, we will endeavour to refill your booked spot, in which case we can refund your deposit less an administration fee. If you want to change your booking to another vessel, we will explore all available options for you. To cover you against unforeseen changes or events, we recommend you obtain travel insurance.
What’s not included in your shipping price?
The following items are NOT included and may apply to your shipment:
– Compulsory or 3rd Party insurance (for your bike to clear Customs)
– Marine cargo insurance – smart protection for your bike (optional)
– Personal travel insurance (optional)
– International Driving Permit (IDP) if required
– Carnet de Passages en Douane (CdP) if required
– Customs or Quarantine re-inspections, if requested or industrial bike cleaning, if required
– Taxes, duties or bonds (if applicable)
Insurance
Do I need marine cargo insurance to cover my bike in transit?
Yes, we recommend you take out insurance to cover your bike and gear from depot to depot. We can provide you with a quote, but the insurance must be purchased directly from a licensed insurance broker.
Sea freight can be exposed to extreme conditions and dramatic events, obviously beyond our control. The premium cost is generally around 2.0-2.5% of CIF value (ie. your bike’s market value plus the shipping cost). We can introduce you to a trusted broker.
