Timor-Leste, a nation forged in resilience, offers amazing, untouched landscapes and a culture that warmly embraces visitors. Your adventure starts here… being the gateway to a continental traverse that promises rugged roads, stunning vistas, and a wonderful cultural immersion.
Arrival in Dili and a Taste of Timorese Life
Arriving in Dili, the capital of Timor-Leste, the air is thick with tropical humidity. The city is buzzing with quiet energy, still finding its rhythm after decades of struggle for independence. Its people, with their deep smiles and inquisitive eyes, are quick to offer a greeting, a testament to their enduring spirit.

Before collecting your bike, it’s essential to soak in Dili’s unique atmosphere. The Cristo Rei of Dili, a towering statue of Christ overlooking the bay, offers panoramic views of the city and its pristine beaches – a perfect spot for reflection. A stroll through the bustling Mercado Municipal reveals a kaleidoscope of local life: vibrant textiles, exotic fruits, and the chatter of bargaining. Sampling local dishes like Ikan Sabuko (grilled fish with tamarind sauce) or a hearty Batar Daan (corn with mung beans) from a street vendor is a must, each bite a flavourful introduction to Timorese cuisine.
The Resistance Museum provides a poignant education on the nation’s struggle for self-determination, offering insights into the resilience of its people.
Timor-Leste: A Rider’s Paradise
On your bike, Timor-Leste opens up for exploring. The roads can be challenging, mostly unpaved outside the major towns, which lead to breathtaking vistas. South from Dili towards Maubisse and Same is amazing – winding mountain passes with spectacular views of terraced rice paddies clinging to steep hillsides. Through traditional villages, where life continues as it has for centuries, and passing dense tropical forests teeming with exotic birds.
The coastal roads, particularly along the north shore heading east or west, hug pristine beaches and offer glimpses of beautiful marine life and stretches of deserted sand. Enjoy riding through coffee plantations in the cooler highlands, where aromas of roasting beans fill the air. Entering villages, there are friendly waves from locals, all adding to the joy of exploring this beautiful island.
Island Hopping to Indonesia and Beyond
Your Timorese leg can then lead you to a border crossing into Indonesian West Timor to catch a vehicle ferry from Kupang (West Timor) to one of the larger Indonesian islands like Flores. Then, you can progressively island hop through Sumbawa, Lombok, Bali, and Java – ready to go beyond.

These inter-island ferries are microcosms of Indonesian life – bustling with people, goods, and a relaxed, communal atmosphere. The time spent at sea offers a different perspective, gazing at volcanic peaks rising majestically from the ocean, and witnessing stunning sunrises and sunsets over the vast expanse of the Indonesian archipelago. Each island brings its own unique culture, cuisine, and riding challenges, from the spiritual heartland of Bali to the volcanic landscapes of Java.
Arriving in Jakarta on the island of Java, the sprawling capital of Indonesia marks a significant milestone. It’s a city of contrasts: modern skyscrapers juxtaposed with ancient markets, a vibrant arts scene alongside bustling traffic. After the relative quiet of the islands, Jakarta is a sensory overload, a place to rest, resupply, and prepare for the next grand leg.
The Overland Traverse: Malaysia and Central Asia
From Jakarta, the adventure continues north to the large island of Sumatra. A vehicle ferry can deliver you and your bike onto the Malaysian peninsula. Here, the roads improve dramatically, offering smooth highways and well-maintained routes. Malaysia presents a blend of Malay, Chinese, and Indian cultures, reflected in its diverse architecture, delicious food, and vibrant festivals. Riding through lush rainforests, past towering tea plantations in the Cameron Highlands, and exploring the historic streets of Penang or Malacca are highlights.

The journey then pushes further north, through Thailand and into the vast expanse of Central Asia (note: Myanmar is closed to tourists). Along your journey, you’ll experience the ancient Silk Road cities, nomadic cultures, and landscapes that range from arid deserts to towering mountain ranges. Each border crossing, each new country, opens another chapter in an unfolding adventure towards a distant horizon.
